Q1) What instruments can you hear?
Hopefully you didn’t miss the trumpet playing the main tune.
There are other, muted, brass instruments in the background, along with snare drum and double bass (a large stringed instrument) and you should also be able to hear the clarinet playing throughout but clearly heard in the last few seconds.
Q2) What mood does it conjure up, do you think?
We think the mood is nostalgic, meaning it conjures up feelings of past times long gone. It’s also a little sad or melancholic and certainly seems to fit with the grey, rainy images of streets with older buildings and railway arches.
Q3) Do you think the music fits the pictures?
See answer to Q2) above.
Q4) What does a TV theme tune like this add to the show?
A familiar TV theme tune instantly tells you that your favourite show is starting. It helps draw you into the show as you remember what happened in the previous episode, so by the time the drama begins you’re totally focussed and ready to be taken further into the storylines. Characters may come and go, but the theme tune provides continuity.
Yes, music is such an important part of our lives linking the past to the present, making memories and helping us find pleasure and meaning even in everyday things.
