Introducing the Tuba

We would welcome any of our tuba or bass playing friends making a short, one-minute, video to introduce the instrument, either B♭ or E♭ or both. Please contact us if you can help.

The Tuba is the largest of the brass musical instrument family, with a total length of tubing of 16 feet (nearly 5 metres).

They are a common brass instrument in orchestras, brass bands and concert bands where they play the bass line, the lower notes that usually underpin the harmonic sound of the music.

In brass bands they are called “basses” rather than tubas.

There are 2 main types of Tuba known as the “B♭” (B flat) tuba and the “E♭” (E flat) tuba:

The B♭ tuba is even bigger than the E♭ tuba and plays even lower notes.

You can find out more about the differences between B♭ and E♭ instruments on our Transposing Instruments page.

See also our page on the Helicon and Sousaphone which are also types of tuba.
