All our music tutors have enhanced DBS clearance to work with children in North Tyneside Schools

Our tutors, as shown above from left to right, are:

Alex Lewis is an experienced professional music tutor working in North Tyneside Schools, and providing assistance and mentoring to our project as part of this work for North Tyneside Music Education Hub.

All our other music tutors are unpaid volunteers, who play as amateur musicians in a variety of bands. See also our faq item: Do any of your music tutors get paid?

Natalie Tidy plays Flugelhorn with Ashington Colliery Band. She is also a mother of 3 children, 2 of whom attended Backworth Park Primary School.

Nicola Ternent plays Tenor Horn with Ashington Colliery Band. Nicola is Natalie’s mother. She is from the village of Burradon and her father played in the Burradon Colliery Band before it folded soon after the closure of the Burradon and Weetslade Colliery in the 1970s.

Gavin Dudley is a Governor of North Tyneside Music Education Hub and plays Bass Trombone with Jayess Newbiggin Brass Band and Sousaphone with Meze Mundo. Gavin has experience of teaching children and adults, and holds a Post-graduate Certificate in Educational Development.

Ailsa Critten plays trumpet and is currently studying for a degree in Music at Cambridge University.

Karen Snaith plays Euphonium and Percussion with Backworth Colliery Band. Karen has 2 children of Secondary School age.

Leah McMillan plays Flugelhorn with Backworth Colliery Band, her Salvation Army Band and The Northern Divisional Salvation Army Youth Band. She is a graduate from Sunderland University in Childhood Studies and has done placements in schools and nurseries. She also has experience of working with children as she has volunteered from the age of 14 in youth groups and Brownies and has is a leader in Girls Brigade. She also has experience in teaching adults and children to play brass instruments (flugelhorn and cornet).

Stephen Frost plays Euphonium with Ellington Colliery Band. He started playing the Cornet 8 years ago at age 13, before moving onto Tenor Horn and now Euphonium. He graduated from Northumbria University in 2016.
